Report on the Queen's Visit to Istanbul

Lecture

It sounded as though it would be quite an uninteresting lecture. What do I really want to know about Ottoman tombstones and the Ottoman way of dealing with death? But I certainly was mistaken. It sounded so morbid, but to date it has been one the most fascinating and animated lectures I have been to. It has made me very envious of those who are able to read the Ottoman script, and has given me an insight into Turkish miniatures. We can look at them not just as pictures but as social history of the time.

This lecture should be repeated to a larger audience. A very big thank you to Etem Bey, our lecturer, and to Nikki and her family for opening her home to us and for being a wonderful hostess. The wine and interesting selection of cheeses was perfect.

It was a really miserable wet evening so thank you to all those who braved the weather to support the BCC and their work for charity. We do hope to see you at the next lecture which will be arranged in the not too distant future. Please watch our web site for details. G.H.

The BCC Annual Bosphorus Boat Trip

picture gallery and a write-up (if you missed it, you missed a treat!)

2007 July 21

Dr Warren Eastwood : “Environment and Landscape Change in Cappadocia since late Antiquity,” a talk at the Galata Association Han, Old Bankalar Cad., Karakoy, in association with The British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara.

Dr Eastwood is a specialist in reconstructing vegetation and landscape change using indicators such as pollen, algae, charcoal, and volcanic ash. Much of his research has been done in Turkey. He has also been responsible for climate reconstructions by analyzing lake sediments, what might be called early global warming indicators.

The BCC annual fete in the Consulate garden :   picture gallery and, off-site, an interview with British Consulate General Barbara Hay.

2007 January 30

Chairman's coffee morning in the former British Jail in Galata, Tuesday, 30 January 2007 : 12.00 noon.

When Britain ruled the waves, seamen ordered to be clapped on irons in Constantinople, were brought here.
Now owned by Anglophiles and Architects Mete Göktuğ and his wife Nadire, it has been restored and converted into an intimate restaurant.
Simon Cole will talk for five minutes on the activities of the BCC for the benefit of newcomers, after which Mete will tell the story of the jail and take us round the house.
This will be followed by a short walk to the former British Post Office, then probably the most important staging post between London and the Raj; now used by a film supply company.
Onward to the site of the Embassy that pre-dated Pera House. The actual Embassy was destroyed in the great fire of Galata (1831), and we will be taken around the present beautiful building which was used as the Chancery after Pera House was opened.
Depending on numbers and individual choice, those who would like lunch can have it in the Jail before the embassy tour, or the party could split into two groups. All the buildings are near one-another; actual walking time less than five minutes.

2006 December 22 : Blue Salon Symposia

The BCC Chairman was invited by the Istanbul Vali (Governor) to speak at one of his regular Blue Salon symposia. He took as his topic 'The Tumultuous Road to Europe -- a British perspective by a eurosceptic' His audience was very surprised to learn that the tumultuous road he referred to was Britain's, culminating as it did with the French veto on entry.
