The BCC
Fish and Chips Night
Saturday
25th October 2008
Saturday dawned grey and overcast and did
not improve as the day wore on. It was an effort to go out
to get down to the ferry to cross over to Karakoy. However,
once there, we found the restaurant, Dersaadet, very easily
as it was the first one under the Galata Bridge. It was an
interesting place with multiple flatscreen TVs all
broadcasting the Fener – Bursa match! Not quite what we were
expecting!
But after a warm welcome from Karen who
mystifyingly gave us each a picture of a different fish,
other people started to arrive. Dersaadet is obviously a
popular Saturday night hotspot and the atmosphere was great.
Many young Turks enjoying a drink and some a hookah, as well
members of our group, made up the crowd.
From then on it only got better. First we
enjoyed a plate of traditional mezes followed by a couple of
hot ones. The ‘unlimited local drinks’ went down well and
everybody settled in. We were instructed by Karen and Ellis
to find others with the same fish as they would be our
teammates: a clever way to ensure we all mingled and got to
know each other. A couple of fishy games later, the match
over, live music began! It was a very A La Turca evening:
the music was loud but great and had us all up on our feet
dancing away between the tables. The much-anticipated fish
and chips arrived and were delicious.
It was with reluctance that the Asian
contingent stood up to leave in order to catch the last boat
at 11pm. Thank you, Karen and Ellis! We look forward to more
evenings like this and urge other members of the community
to come along: rain or no rain, we had a truly fun evening!
