Quiz Night Report
Saturday 31st Jan saw the first BCC QUiZ NiGHT and with very
little idea of how people would respond, it was always going to
be a nightmare to organise... But organise it we did! And with
feedback sheets being issued and collected, we were hoping to
get a good idea of how to shape future events. This review
includes the feedback of the 43 responses we had on the night.
After some technical glitches with the email (we apologise
once again!), a few interested responses trickled in and so the
first real challenge was finding a venue for a Saturday night
that would and could take a group of 30 people from the British
Community. Of course, football is a big part of Turkish life, so
finding a central location with an atmosphere, that wasn't
keeping space for their regular footie fans was a bit of a
challenge. But the Elma Pub and Cafe came up trumps with three
floors and space enough for all... or so we thought!
On the night, we had had confirmation of 60 people coming. On
the night, about 40 of the confirmed attendees actually turned
up but nearly 100 came along. This explains the underlying
feeling that the venue was too small! The only way we can plan
for this in future is to restrict numbers and refuse entry on
the door!! Nevertheless, the venue still scored an average of
7/10 in the feedback.
Overall the quiz was well received, if a little different
from what was expected. Questions were handed out on sheets to
allow for varying levels of English language skills and a lack
of a PA system. The questions themselves received a mixed
response. However, - There was no single question that every
team got wrong. - The highest scoring round (every team got a
minimum of 7 out of 9) was the baby round - The lowest scoring
round (scores ranged from 3 to 8) was the Find Osama round. -
Unsurprisingly then, that the most favoured round was the "Baby"
round, and the least favoured was the "Find Osama" round. And
yes, we were aware that picture quality was not the best - a
result of yet more technical glitches on the day! - On a scale
of 1 to 10 (10 being too hard), the questions were rated at
7.45.
The future of QUiZ NiGHT was also in question. There was a
split between people wanting future quizzes monthly (55%) and
quarterly (38%) but 91% were in favour of weekend quizzes.
Similarly, 90% were happy to pay 10TL entry in future, even
though 67% wanted more of the same type of prizes (i.e. cheap
and cheerful rather than of any intrisic value). The last
question regarding allocation to teams was also devisive. Of the
43 responses, 39 answered this question with a preference - two
thirds wanting to enter as part of a team and one third
preferring to be allocated.
Finally, the other "comments" section offered a wide range of
wise insights - some being wiser than others. The over-riding
theme was the need for a compere with microphone to read out the
questions. Of course, this was always something we wanted, but
with the lack of confirmed numbers, a Saturday night etc. this
was never going to be possible on the first ever BCC QUiZ NiGHT.
All the feedback comments can be found on the BCC website
(spelling mistakes included!) -
www.bccistanbul.org and
can be discussed on the sublime portal forum -
www.sublimeportal.com
Of course, this report would not be complete without mention
of the winning team (the Blackberries) and the losers (the
Double AAs) whos names and photo's will be enshrined the BCC
QUiZ NiGHT scrap book. This book will be updated after each QUiZ
NiGHT and be available to see at each event.
So we're hoping to make the BCC QUiZ NiGHT a regular feature
in the social calendar and are already planning the next one: -
Saturday 28th March. Venue to be confirmed! - Cost 10TL per
person - Open to teams AND individuals - 12 teams max (i.e. 72
people) because of space restrictions. - Compere included
If you are interested in organising a team of 6, the team
captain should email
quiz@bccistanbul.org and include all names. If you are
coming on your own and/or want to be allocated, please email the
same address!
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who turned up and made
the evening as fun as it was. And more thanks to all the people
who volunteered to help. Could I ask you to email
quiz@bccistanbul.org
with all your contact details and what you are able to offer
(e.g. writing questions or compering, supplying a mic/amp or
photocopying?)
Watch out for full details coming soon!
